 Guy's Report

Guy Woodman
2005 was the first year of my three year share scheme. There were 30 shares on offer - I managed to sell 7.

It's been a year in which I have definitely improved but a frustrating one at the same time. I played 13 events of the scheduled 19 on the Europro Tour (I missed 4 due to the filming of the Big Break IV). Five times I was in the top 10 going into the final round and my best finish being 11th at the Sprowston Manor Masters. My scoring average for the last round was a very disappointing 75.2!! - something that I will definitely need to work on (Mindset!) So I gave myself some great chances but frustratingly couldn't finish the job off. I finished 54th on the order of merit which was very disappointing but fortunately I managed to squeeze into the Tour Championship (open to the top 50 on the order of merit) in Portugal this November. Again another frustrating week with the putter cost me a good finish. I ended up shooting 72, 72, 72 finishing 35th.

I have made great strides forward with my swing this year but my putter has let me down, averaging nearly 32 putts a round so some work to be done in this area as well as my all round game. If I can just get my putting average down to 29 or below next year is a very exciting prospect.

European Tour School this year had mixed fortunes for me. I played great at the first stage at Charthills, shooting rounds of 68, 72, 72, 68 to qualify for the first time in 4 attempts. I then went onto the 2nd stage at PGA Catalunya in Spain where I played some great golf, averaging 14 greens per round. Unfortunately a cold putter saw me miss out narrowly from qualifying for the final stage by 2 shots, shooting rounds of 72, 73,72, 69.

A lot of positives to take though as I played with European and Challenge Tour players all that week and felt very comfortable holding my own which was very encouraging.

My plans over the winter are to re-evaluate and set new goals. I have just started working with Pete Marcasciano in the Stoke Park gym under going a new strength program which I feel will help tremendously with my swing and power. I plan to work with one of the top putting gurus in Europe as well as taking on a full time psychologist combining this with more work with my swing coach, Andrew Nicholson. With a limited budget this year it's been hard to do all the things I've wanted to do in order to further my career but hopefully more shares will be sold this winter which will allow me to do all the above things - preparing myself as well as I possibly can for the start of next year!

I've had some great highlights this year - the Big Break IV being one of them - an experience I'll never forget. I went along for auditions back in April at our first Europro event in Norwich. I never thought any more of it until I got told I was in the show a couple of weeks before they started filming in mid June. It meant I had to miss a few Europro events but I felt the experience would be well worth it - the prize was playing for European Tour exemptions.

I was a little unsure what to expect going into it meeting 11 other guys I didn't know and having no idea whatsoever's involved! But the whole experience couldn't have gone better. All the contestants gelled very well! It was actually quite emotional when people got eliminated off the show as we had all grown so close in such a short period of time.

There is no doubt in my mind that I came away a better person and player after the whole experience. You learn a tremendous amount about yourself - how to handle pressure situations and how to conduct yourself. It's also kind of weird seeing how you come across on TV and then recalling how you actually felt in those situations.

Finishing 2nd and coming so close to gaining those European Tour exemptions and the other great things that go with it was naturally very disappointing but I can take a lot of positives out of the whole thing. Firstly I did great to get as far as I did and secondly becoming the first contestant on any of the 4 previous series to win the two year lease on a Ford Explorer was amazing and lastly the exposure the show gave me was tremendous.

If I get enough funding together I hope to go to America at the start of the year to practice and play some mini tour events before the season starts over here. You never know, something may come off the back of the Big Break IV over there.

I then plan to come back at the start of April to compete in a full season on the Europro Tour, hopefully gain some starts on the Challenge Tour as well as trying to qualify for the British Open and my European Tour Card. My full schedule for next year will be out within the next month or so.
