East Berkshire's Guy Woodman returned to winning ways with a four-under-par total in the latest PGA South Region Winter Series event, supported by Titleist & FootJoy at The Berkshire and Swinley Forest.
The two-time Powerade PGA Assistants' champion was lying second on four-under-par behind Jamie Harris (The Nevill) after a rain-soaked first round over the red course at The Berkshire. Despite an eagle on the par five 13th, Woodman was two shots adrift of 2009 PGA Cup player Harris, who shot a near flawless six-under-par round, including eagles at the 13th and 15th, earning him the cheque for best round of the day.
At Swinley Forest Harris extended his lead to go to seven-under-par after 27 holes, but disaster struck on the 15th with a triple bogey seven.
Having seen his lead cut with Woodman notching birdies at the 12th and the 13th to chop two strokes off Harris's lead. Harris compounded his error with bogeys at the 16th and the 17th to card four-over-par and a two-under-par total, while Woodman delivered three more regulation pars to push Harris into second place.
Woodman produced the best round of the day at Swinley. Three birdies countered three bogeys, but the resulting level par 68 was good enough to walk away with his first win of the season, plus cheques for the round of the day, and as overall winner. In addition, as the leading assistant, he secured a Titleist and FootJoy ball, glove and shoe contract.
"I drove really well all day at Swinley, and while I was settling for second place at one point, I did what I had to do to win," said Woodman.
"Seventeen greens in regulation are a good indication I'm acquiring the consistency needed to set up more wins, and try again for the Tour card at the end of 2011. It was a fantastic opportunity to play two such great courses, and for the clubs to allow us the experience."
