Only three other people broke par and my 67, 65 started looking pretty good.

"I learnt a lot about Dale Hill's fast and tricky greens from the Pro-Am, and I stuck to my game plan: keep my ball in business, set up my second shots, be patient and hope to make a few putts. I was a bit apprehensive all the same.

"I got a few loose ones out of the system early on, and air-mailing my second over the green and out of bounds at the sixth from the semi rough shook me up, but I stayed focused. Two more birdies on the fourth and seventh got Woodman to six-under-par, and then he got a big break on the 10th.

He said: “It was a blind tee shot and I hit my drive too far left; the guys I was playing with said I’d need to hit another. I did but that promptly went the same way as the first one, so I was now playing five off the tee. After all that, we found the first ball in an environmental hazard and although it was a bit damp I got it out to around 90 yards, pitched up and made the putt for a par!

“I just missed birdie putts on the next three holes, and made a good two putt par on the long par three 14th to finish with 64. Two more birdies on the 12th and 14th put him in the lead on six-under-par.

With just the 18th left to play, things came apart. I middled my drive on 18 and knew I had to keep away from the right hand front of the green where the pin was placed.

"My six-iron was short, so I played a little bump and run shot which looked good initially, but the ball caught the slope and wound up in the bunker from which there was no shot to the pin. I should have made par after that drive, but I was pleased to make a good score."

Having birdied the third, Ablett chipped in to eagle the seventh, adding a birdie on the 12th to reach four-under-par. He then bogeyed the 15th taking four shots from 68 yards.

He said: "I'd hit a great drive to set up another birdie opportunity, but made a mess of it. We all thought my 45 foot putt was going in, but somehow it slid past.
